Why I love being a Seattleite!
It’s NOT because of the 250 days of rain; NOT the unavoidable bumper-to-bumper traffic on the rickety, old Alaskan Way Viaduct. It’s because of Seafair and the Blue Angels. I’ve never photographed my own images of the Blue Angels… Until this year! The weather was perfect (Sun and in the 80’s, clear as crystal skies). You were able to see the Sound and Mountain in one panoramic view.
We had a luau-style potluck/pre-funk to Seafair at Anthony and Pam’s house on Saturday. There, everyone came together to enjoy the sun and sounds of Seafair. They’re home sits on the eastern slope of Beacon Avenue and overlooks Lake Washington, the proverbial stage of the hydroplanes and the Blue Angels. Only there, I was able to select my shots for the real deal on Sunday. See, the pilots practice on Friday and Saturday for their performance on Sunday. It gave me a chance to “practice” too, LOL. I have to say, it was quite challenging shooting them at their top speeds (especially when they were zooming overhead only at, what seemed to be, less than 100 feet above us!!!) It was insane! After the first few runs, I got the hang of it and was able to gauge when they were coming and at what direction they were flying in from.
On Sunday, it was the real thing. And, if I can say so myself, the images were amazing!!! Here are a few shots I took. Enjoy!
Here's "Big Bertha"... This huge aircraft flies through the whole city of Seattle before it swoops down below the treeline on the lake. It's the cue for the audience to let them know that the Blue Angels are coming
